A low-lying archipelago off the coast of Sfax in the Gulf of Gabes, consisting of two main islands connected by a causeway and linked to the mainland by ferry. The islands are almost entirely flat with a maximum elevation of just a few metres, fringed by shallow sandy beaches and traditional palm-frond fish traps deployed in the clear sea. The pace of life is slower than the mainland, and the fishing villages retain a character largely unchanged by mass tourism. The shallow waters and gentle tides make swimming calm and accessible.
