Ringed by imposing tenth-century ramparts, the old town of Sfax is among the most authentic medinas in Tunisia, less altered by tourism than those of the coast. Its grid of covered souks trades in fabric, spices, gold and everyday goods, while the fortified gates and towers of the walls still frame the entrances. Traditional houses, small mosques and the great mosque itself lie within the enclosure. For travellers seeking a working, lived-in medieval quarter rather than a curated one, Sfax offers an especially rewarding experience.
