An oasis city on the northern edge of the Chott el-Djerid salt lake in southwestern Tunisia, historically an important caravan stop on trans-Saharan trade routes. The old medina district of Ouled el-Hadef is built entirely from small patterned yellow-brick laid in geometric reliefs, a local architectural tradition found nowhere else in Tunisia. Beyond the city, the palm grove shelters thousands of date palms and a network of irrigation channels dating back at least a millennium. The surrounding desert landscape includes access to Chott el-Djerid and the sand dunes of the Nefzaoua.
