A coastal town in northwestern Tunisia at the foot of the Kroumirie mountain range, combining a Genoese fort on a small islet with a beach of coarse sand backed by pine-covered hills. The surrounding waters support coral reefs of notable quality, making the area one of Tunisia's main diving destinations. The hinterland offers access to the dense cork-oak forests of the Kroumirie, inhabited by Barbary macaques. The town is also a venue for an internationally recognised jazz festival held each summer.
