Abandonment preserved Kerkuane. Deserted around 250 B.C. during the First Punic War and never reoccupied by Rome, this town on Tunisia's Cap Bon peninsula is the only Phoenician-Punic city to come down to us essentially unaltered. Its houses follow a standard plan — many with private baths — that reveals surprisingly sophisticated urban thinking. UNESCO inscribed Kerkuane and its necropolis in 1985.
