Founded in 1900 by Jews of Austrian origin, this is the only Ashkenazi synagogue in Istanbul that remains active, standing on Yüksek Kaldırım, the steep street running down from Galata Tower. The facade blends European eclectic styles, and the interior is noted for its dark wooden Torah ark carved in a distinctly Central European manner. It offers a different architectural accent from the city's predominantly Sephardic houses of worship.
