The principal Sephardic synagogue of Istanbul, opened in 1951 on Büyük Hendek Street near Galata Tower and still the center of the city's Jewish communal life. Its name means Oasis of Peace, and the sanctuary with its large central chandelier hosts most of the community's weddings and ceremonies. Visits are possible through the adjacent Jewish Museum of Turkey, which shares the complex; advance arrangements and ID are required for security.
