Spanning the mouth of the Golden Horn, this bascule bridge links the old imperial city at Eminönü with the Galata and Beyoğlu districts across the water. The present two-level structure, opened in the 1990s, carries road and tram traffic above and a row of fish restaurants and cafés below, while anglers line its railings from dawn to dusk. Successive bridges have stood here since the mid-nineteenth century, each a stage of the city's social life. The view of the Süleymaniye and Yeni mosques beyond the fishing rods is iconic.
