The New Mosque, or Yeni Cami, stands beside the Golden Horn at Eminönü, its cascade of grey domes rising above the ferry piers and the Galata Bridge. Begun in 1597 and finished only in 1663 after long interruptions, it was commissioned by successive Ottoman queen mothers. The interior glows with İznik tiles in blues and greens, and a royal loge linked the sultan's household to prayers. Visitors reach it through the bustle of the adjacent Spice Bazaar, and the courtyard is a favoured spot for feeding pigeons.
