Purana Qila, meaning Old Fort, is a sixteenth-century fortification in New Delhi built on a site with occupational history stretching back to the time of the Mahabharata. The fort was begun by the Mughal Emperor Humayun and completed by Sher Shah Suri, who displaced him, and contains the Qila-i-Kuhna mosque and the octagonal Sher Mandal tower — the library where Humayun is said to have fallen to his death. Broad moat walls and three massive red sandstone gateways make the exterior a fine example of early Mughal military architecture.
