India Gate is a war memorial arch standing 42 metres tall on the ceremonial Kartavya Path in New Delhi, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and inaugurated in 1931. The arch commemorates 84,000 Indian soldiers who died in the First World War and the Third Anglo-Afghan War, with names inscribed on its surface. At its eastern end, the Amar Jawan Jyoti eternal flame burns beneath a canopy in honour of soldiers killed in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
