Opened in the late 1950s beside the ramparts of the Old Fort, this large zoo was designed with open moated enclosures rather than tight cages. Its grounds shelter Bengal tigers, Asiatic lions, rhinoceros, leopards and a range of deer, along with migratory birds that gather at its lakes in winter. Broad avenues and shaded groves allow visitors to walk or take a battery-powered ride between the enclosures. Positioned within view of Purana Qila's walls, it combines wildlife viewing with glimpses of the medieval fortifications.
