St Michael's Cathedral Basilica is the seat of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Toronto, a Gothic Revival church consecrated in 1848 and among the oldest in the city. Its tall spire rises above the downtown, and the interior, restored in recent years, glows with stained glass, painted decoration and a carved altar. Modelled in part on an English medieval church, it serves a large and diverse congregation. Raised to the honorary rank of minor basilica.
