Nathan Phillips Square is the main public plaza of downtown Toronto, laid out in front of the curved twin towers of the modernist City Hall completed in 1965. Its reflecting pool doubles as a skating rink in winter, framed by elevated walkways and the illuminated three-dimensional Toronto sign that has become a popular photo landmark. The square hosts concerts, farmers' markets, protests and civic ceremonies throughout the year. Designed as a democratic gathering space, it remains the symbolic civic heart of Canada's largest city.
