Ussher Fort was founded by the Dutch in the seventeenth century as a trading post on the Accra shoreline and later passed into British hands. Its thick whitewashed walls enclosed cells that held enslaved people awaiting transport, and in the twentieth century it served as a colonial prison. Today it houses a small museum interpreting Accra's history and the transatlantic slave trade. Standing amid the Jamestown district, it sits close to the old harbour, offering a sobering counterpoint to the lively streets nearby.
