The Black Star Gate is a monumental archway crowned by a large black star, the emblem that gives Ghana's football team and national identity their nickname. It stands at Independence Square in central Accra and was built to mark the country's sovereignty. The gate frames views across the vast paved parade ground toward the sea. Beneath it burns a flame associated with the continued struggle for African liberation. Crowds gather here during Independence Day celebrations each March, when the square fills with marching contingents.
