Independence Square, also called Black Star Square, is a vast paved ceremonial ground on the Accra seafront, one of the largest public squares in Africa. Laid out to host national parades and celebrations, it is framed by the Independence Arch and Black Star Gate and can accommodate tens of thousands of spectators. On Independence Day each March, marching contingents and crowds fill the plaza in a display of national pride. Facing the Atlantic, it also functions as a monument to Ghana's early independence.
