The National Museum of Ghana in Accra is the country's largest and oldest museum, opened in 1957 to coincide with independence. Its collections span archaeology, ethnography and fine art, from ancient pottery and Akan goldweights to ceremonial stools, kente cloth and masks. Exhibits trace the region's history, including the transatlantic slave trade and the movements that led to nationhood. Contemporary Ghanaian art features alongside traditional objects.
