Rising near the Tophane quay, this ornate mosque was built for Sultan Mahmud II in the 1820s by Krikor Balyan of the Armenian architectural dynasty that shaped much of late Ottoman Istanbul. Its Baroque and Empire flourishes include slender fluted minarets, curving marble cornices and an interior rich with gilding and calligraphy. The name means mosque of victory, commemorating military reforms of the era. As a bridge between classical tradition and Westernising taste, it announces the language later used at Dolmabahçe Palace nearby.
