Turkey's most storied secondary school, tracing its origins to a palace school founded in 1481 and re-established in 1868 as a French-language lycée. Its monumental gate on Galatasaray Square, flanked by a garden of plane trees, is one of the defining landmarks of Istiklal Avenue and gave its name to the famous sports club born among its students. The neoclassical main building behind the railings anchors the midpoint of any walk along the avenue.
