This short underground funicular linking the Karaköy waterfront with the heights of Beyoğlu opened in 1875 and is among the oldest surviving underground urban rail lines in the world. Built to spare merchants and residents the steep climb up to the Pera district, it climbs a tunnel of some six hundred metres between two stations in barely a minute and a half. The vintage carriages and historic upper station preserve the character of the belle époque city. Still in daily use, it is both a practical link and a working monument.
