This early seventeenth-century Mughal bridge was built during the reign of Emperor Jahangir to carry a road across a stream toward the Nizamuddin shrine and the route to Agra. Its name references the twelve piers that support the long series of pointed arches, punctuated by slender minaret-like turrets at intervals. Constructed of grey quartzite, it is among the finest surviving Mughal bridges in the capital. Although the watercourse it once spanned has largely dwindled, the elegant multi-arched structure endures.
