These are the remains of the earliest fortified city of Delhi, raised in the mid-eleventh century by the Tomara rulers and later expanded by the Chauhans as Qila Rai Pithora. Massive rubble ramparts and bastions once enclosed the settlement that predates the Islamic conquest, and fragments of these walls still run through Mehrauli and the surrounding ridge. The site marks the nucleus around which successive dynasties built their capitals near the Qutb complex. Heritage walkers trace the surviving wall lines through scrub and parkland.
