This fourteenth-century Tughlaq mosque is notable for its rare covered and partly enclosed plan, one of the few surviving examples of the type in India. Its name, meaning window, refers to the latticed openings that pierce its heavy fortress-like exterior. Inside, thick tapering walls and rows of squat pillars divide the space into a grid of small bays, leaving open courtyards for light and air. Battlemented corner towers reinforce its defensive character in the sober monumental style favoured under Firuz Shah Tughlaq.
