The Saxon Garden is one of the oldest public parks in the world, laid out in the early 18th century in the French formal style for King Augustus II the Strong. Straight tree-lined avenues, Baroque statues and a central fountain give the grounds a stately symmetry. At its edge stands the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, sheltered beneath the surviving arcade of a destroyed royal palace. Long favoured for strolling and open-air concerts, the garden is a green pause between the modern city centre and the historic streets.
