The ornamental main gate to the University of Warsaw opens off the Royal Route, crowned by a gilded Polish eagle and flanking the historic campus. Beyond it stretches a leafy courtyard lined with academic buildings, including the neoclassical Kazimierz Palace that once served as a royal summer residence. Founded in 1816, the university is the country's largest and a centre of national intellectual life. The gate and grounds are freely accessible, and the surrounding streets are dense with bookshops and cafés.
