A pair of nineteenth-century market halls in central Warsaw, this landmark brick complex opened in 1901 to bring the city's scattered street trade under permanent roofs. The twin buildings, damaged during the war and later rebuilt, still house grocers, butchers and produce stalls, while an open-air market of flowers and fruit spreads across the square between them. Their sturdy red-brick façades and arched windows typify the utilitarian architecture of the era. It remains a familiar working food market in the district.
