Completed in 1829 and designed by Irish-American architect James O'Donnell in the Gothic Revival style, the Basilique Notre-Dame dominates Place d'Armes in Old Montreal. The interior is distinguished by a polychromatic wooden ceiling vault in blue and gold, a carved altar screen by Victor Bourgeau, and thousands of gilded decorative elements. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Sacré-Coeur behind the chancel contains modern bronze reliefs by Charles Daudelin installed after a 1978 fire.
