Montreal City Hall is an imposing Second Empire building in Old Montreal, completed in 1878 and rebuilt behind its surviving walls after a fire in 1922. Its mansard roofs, corner pavilions and ornate stonework overlook Place Jacques-Cartier and the Champ-de-Mars behind. From its central balcony a French president once famously proclaimed a slogan that stirred Quebec nationalism. The richly decorated council chamber and grand hall of honour make it one of the city's most elaborate civic interiors, open to visitors on tours.
