Old Montreal occupies the original walled settlement on the north bank of the St. Lawrence River and contains the densest concentration of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century stone architecture in North America outside Havana. The district runs from Berri Street in the east to McGill Street in the west and is anchored by the Basilique Notre-Dame, Place d'Armes, and the Vieux-Port waterfront promenade along the river. The cobblestoned Rue Saint-Paul is one of Canada's oldest commercial streets in continuous use.
