Place Jacques-Cartier is a lively sloping square in the heart of Old Montreal, opened in the 1800s on the site of a former governor's mansion and market ground. Lined with stone buildings housing restaurants and terraces, it runs down toward the Old Port and is topped by a tall column bearing a statue of Admiral Nelson, one of the oldest monuments in the city. Street performers, artists and flower vendors crowd the cobbles in summer. The square forms a natural gathering point in the historic quarter.
