Akshardham is a vast Hindu temple complex on the eastern bank of the Yamuna River in New Delhi, inaugurated in 2005 and built primarily from pink Rajasthani sandstone and Italian Carrara marble. The central monument is carved with more than 20,000 figures of saints, devotees, and wildlife, and is flanked by gardens, an ornamental moat, and musical fountains. The scale and intricacy of the stone carving, executed entirely by hand by thousands of craftspeople, make it a significant contemporary example of traditional Indian temple craftsmanship.
