A Baroque palace complex in the heart of Dresden's historic centre, the Zwinger was built in the early 18th century for Augustus the Strong as a setting for festivities and tournaments. Its symmetrical arrangement of pavilions, arcaded galleries, and ornamental fountains arranged around a central courtyard constitutes one of the finest examples of German Late Baroque architecture. The complex houses several notable museums including the Old Masters Picture Gallery.
