The Semper Gallery is the wing of Dresden's Zwinger palace that houses the Old Masters Picture Gallery, one of the most important collections of European painting. Designed by the architect Gottfried Semper and completed in the mid-nineteenth century, it closes the northern side of the Zwinger courtyard. Its galleries display works by Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, and Vermeer, and its most famous painting is Raphael's Sistine Madonna, whose two pensive cherubs at the base have become an image in their own right.
