Brühl's Terrace is an elevated promenade above the Elbe in central Dresden, long celebrated as the balcony of Europe. Built atop a stretch of the old city fortifications, it was transformed in the eighteenth century into landscaped gardens for a powerful Saxon minister before opening to the public. A broad stone staircase flanked by allegorical sculptures of the times of day leads up from the palace square. Strolling its length, visitors pass grand buildings including the art academy and enjoy views over the river and its bridges.
