The Jordaan is a beloved historic neighbourhood of Amsterdam, laid out in the early 17th century as a district for workers and immigrants beyond the grand merchant canals. Its narrow streets and small side canals were named after flowers and trees, and the modest gabled houses are now highly desirable. Hidden courtyards known as hofjes, once almshouses, dot the quarter behind unassuming doors. Local brown cafes, galleries and street markets keep a village-like feel, and visitors pass the Anne Frank House and browse Saturday markets nearby.
