This tall white memorial pillar dominates Dam Square in the heart of Amsterdam, honouring the Dutch victims of the Second World War. Unveiled in 1956, it stands about 22 metres high and is decorated with sculpted figures representing suffering, resistance, and peace, including chained men and a woman with a child symbolising renewal. Urns embedded in the rear wall contain soil from the provinces. Each year on 4 May the square hosts the national remembrance ceremony.
