The 4 biggest regions — North Holland, South Holland, Gelderland and Zeeland — read below as chapters, with 10 more waiting past them.

Chapter I · North Holland · 110 places

North Holland

An open-air neighbourhood of preserved green wooden houses and working windmills sits along the Zaan river north of Amsterdam. Craft workshops for clogs, cheese, and pigments recreate life in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Chapter II · South Holland · 78 places

South Holland

A cluster of nineteen eighteenth-century windmills lines the polders where the Lek and Noord rivers meet. The site captures the Dutch tradition of draining low-lying land and is a striking place to walk or cycle among the dikes.

Chapter III · Gelderland · 41 places

Gelderland

One of the country's largest national parks combines heathland, drifting sand dunes, and pine and oak woodland. Free white bicycles let visitors roam the trails, and red deer and wild boar move through the reserve.

Chapter IV · Zeeland · 37 places

Zeeland

Village at the westernmost point of Walcheren, sitting behind a massive sea dike that replaced dunes washed away centuries ago. The dike was bombed by the Allies in October 1944 to flood German-occupied Walcheren, an event commemorated in local memorials and a small museum in the former lighthouse area. A walk along the top of the dike gives wide views over the North Sea shipping lanes.
