This memorial beside the Westerkerk in central Amsterdam commemorates gay men and lesbians who have been persecuted for their sexuality, including those killed under the Nazi regime. Opened in 1987 and designed by Karin Daan, it was among the first monuments of its kind in the world. It consists of three large pink granite triangles set into the pavement at different levels, together forming a larger triangle. One triangle steps down toward the canal, where flowers are often laid.
