Standing beside the Royal Palace on Dam Square, this late-Gothic church dates largely from the fifteenth century, its name distinguishing it from the older Oude Kerk. It is the site of Dutch royal inaugurations and hosts major art and photography exhibitions rather than regular services. Inside are elaborate tombs of naval heroes, a monumental carved pulpit and a large organ backed by a gilded case. Its location at the civic centre has made it a stage for national ceremonies and public gatherings for centuries.
