Behind the facade of an ordinary seventeenth-century canal house hides a complete Catholic church built across the attics of three adjoining buildings. Constructed after the Reformation, when public Catholic worship was banned, it allowed the faithful to gather discreetly under the guise of a private home. The hidden church retains its altar, organ and galleries, while the lower floors preserve period living quarters. The museum offers a rare view of religious tolerance and concealment in the Dutch Golden Age.
