The Joburg Theatre in the Braamfontein district of Johannesburg opened in 1962 and is one of the city's leading stages for musicals, drama, dance and pantomime. Its complex holds several auditoriums, the largest seating over a thousand, and it is well known for its long-running annual pantomime and for hosting major touring and local productions. Renamed and repositioned after the end of apartheid to serve all the city's communities, it remains a central cultural institution.
