One of the largest art museums on the African continent, occupying a grand building designed by Edwin Lutyens beside Joubert Park in central Johannesburg. Its collections span European painting, South African historical and contemporary works, and traditional African art and beadwork. Opened in 1915 and later extended, the gallery holds thousands of pieces across its skylit halls. Despite its challenging inner-city setting, it remains a major repository of the country's visual heritage.
