A cable-stayed bridge spanning the railway yards between the Braamfontein and Newtown districts of Johannesburg, opened in 2003 as the longest of its kind in the region at the time. Named for the former president, its tall pylons and radiating cables have become an emblem of the city's post-apartheid regeneration. The bridge links cultural and business quarters that were previously divided by the rail corridor and is lit in colour at night. It carries pedestrians and vehicles and features in many views of the modern skyline.
