The Maboneng Precinct is a regenerated district on the eastern edge of central Johannesburg, created from the 2000s by converting derelict industrial and warehouse buildings into galleries, studios, shops and apartments. Its name means place of light in Sotho, and it became a focus of the city's efforts to revive a decayed inner-city fabric. Streets are marked by large murals, a weekend market and reused factory shells. Visitors browse the arts venues and rooftop views.
