The highest court on constitutional matters in the country, built on the site of the notorious Old Fort prison complex on Constitution Hill in Johannesburg. Opened in 2004, its chamber deliberately incorporates bricks from a demolished prison block, and the airy, art-filled building was designed to embody transparency and dignity. Sunlight filters through the courtroom's slanted windows onto a public gallery. Contemporary artworks line the corridors, and the court anchors a precinct devoted to the nation's turn to democracy.
