A cylindrical residential skyscraper in the Berea district of Johannesburg, completed in 1975 and, at 54 storeys, one of the tallest apartment buildings on the continent. Its hollow core forms a dramatic central void that has become an icon of the city's architecture and shifting fortunes. Once a symbol of luxury, the tower declined sharply before undergoing renewal, and its illuminated crown dominates the inner-city skyline. It features widely in photography, film and urban art about modern Johannesburg.
