The Sala Chalermkrung is a landmark theatre near Bangkok's old town, opened in 1933 as one of Asia's first air-conditioned cinemas and a gift marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city. Its art deco building later became a stage for khon, the masked dance-drama that enacts episodes from the Ramakien epic. Restored and still active, it presents khon performances that showcase elaborate costumes, gilded masks and stylised movement. Its art deco design and central location near Chinatown make it an easy stop for sightseers.
