Gammeltorv, the Old Square, is the oldest marketplace in Copenhagen, joined to the adjoining Nytorv to form a long open space along the pedestrian shopping street. At its centre stands the Caritas Well, a Renaissance fountain from 1608 that on ceremonial days spouts jets of water and gilded balls dancing on the surface. Once the site of the medieval town hall and public punishments, the square is now lined with cafés and hosts a small market. It lies a short walk from the modern city hall square.
