Strøget is a long pedestrian shopping street running through the heart of old Copenhagen, often cited as one of Europe's longest car-free retail thoroughfares. Formed by a chain of connected streets and squares, it links major public spaces and passes historic buildings, fountains and churches. Shops range from international chains to Danish design stores, while street performers and cafes animate the route. Pedestrianised in the 1960s as an early example of reclaiming streets for walkers, it remains a central artery of city life.
